The Department of Physics occupies half of the Physics and Chemistry building which provides space for offices, laboratories and other department activities. Research laboratories include solid state physics laboratories for surface studies of crystals, a biophysics laboratory specializing in the study of physics of the human eye, and an experimental nuclear physics laboratory for the preparation of experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Laboratories for the study of nanomaterials and nonlinear optics are located in the Owa Ehan building.

The University is a member of Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy, a consortium of universities which operates a 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tuczon, Arizona, and a 0.6-m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.
