Prerequisites:
MAC 2313, PHY2048, 2049.   The course will use Mathematica as well. There is a brief Wolfram tutorial online to help introduce you as well as some class examples. You will also need to use your FIU email account. If you do not regularly log into your FIU account, you will need to set the forwarding (or start checking it regularly).

Textbook: Electromagnetism, Pollack & Stump, 2nd edition, published by Addison Wesley (2002), ISBN 0805385673.

Course Objectives:

PHY 4323 and PHY4324 will cover the theory of electromagnetic fields and waves, developed from basic principles. Vector calculus, Coulomb's law, Gauss's law, electrostatic potential, dielectrics, solutions to Laplace's and Poisson's equations, magnetic induction, vector potential, magnetic materials, Maxwell's equations and the propagation of waves in space and varius media are discussed.

Course Format:
This course is primarily lecture based, however the grading is internet-based.   Solutions to homeworks will also be available on the web.  We will also introduce using Mathematica for some of the course homework.

E-mail will be used throughout the course to facilitate communications between the instructor and students. For that purpose, you will need to use your official FIU email. If you were registered before the start of classes, you should already have received a welcome email from me.

Grading:
We will have one in-class mid-term plus a cumulative final for the course.    Grades are based on homework, mid-term exam, and the (cumulative) final exam:

Homework
50%
Mid-term exam
20%
Final Exam
30%

No make-ups will be arranged or are possible.  Incomplete grades can be given only for documented reasons beyond the control of the student, and not for failing work.

Assignments:
A new homework assignment will be given each week.  Note that they may cover more or less than one chapter.  Homework assignments will be updated throughout the term.  Students are allowed to work with others on the homeworks, however all work turned in must be the students own.
