The new student observatory at FIU, the Stocker AstroScience Center, is nearing completion. The observatory, a result of private State funds, will be the premier student observatory in the State. Some of its many features will include a 24” automated telescope, a specialized control room for the SARA telescopes which will have the feel of a Starship bridge, and an entrance/exhibition hall with some unique artwork in the form of an original glass tile mosaic in the floor, and a depiction of the early universe on the domed ceiling. The observatory will also include dedicated lab space, offices and research rooms for the FIU astronomers. The construction is expected to be completed in October of this year. The grand opening is currently scheduled to be on November 12th, 2013. Opening week will feature the ribbon cutting ceremony with Dr. John Mather (Nobel 2006) on Tuesday the 12th, and a student tour day, followed by a Music at the Observatory day and a NASA day.
