Electronics Shop

The purpose of the Electronics Shop is to design and manufacture high-quality electronic equipment and components in support of scientific research. The shop provides electronics engineering services to faculty, students and research staff throughout the College of Arts, Sciences and Education and the University.

  • Location

The electronic shop occupies two adjacent rooms on the second floor of the Chemistry & Physics building: CP 273A (476 sq. ft.) and CP 273B (284 sq. ft.).

  • Electronics Shop Personnel

Mr. Wenlue "Norman" Huang is the technical staff assigned to the Electronics Shop. He can be contacted at (305) 348-3952 or The department chairperson, Dr. Bernard Gerstman ( or 305-348-3115), is the direct supervisor of shop personnel and activities. In addition shop policies and procedures are overseen by the Physics Department's Shop Committee which has a representative from each of the experimental research groups and is currently chaired by Dr. Caroline Simpson. For information related to the Machine Shop please contact Dr. Simpson at (305) 348-1565 or via

  • Shop Fee

The fee for shop work is currently set at $35/hour.

When writing grant proposals, researchers are encouraged to request sufficient funds to cover the costs of any anticipated electronics shop time. Any such work will then be charged to the grant. For College of Arts, Sciences and Education faculty without grant support, hourly shop charges will be entered in a ledger for bookkeeping and reporting purposes. The shop welcomes jobs from outside the College of Arts, Sciences and Education. Non-CASE jobs will be charged the set shop fee, either from a C&G account or the requester's department E&G account.

When discussing a possible job for the shop, our electronical engineer will make a rough initial estimate of how much time the job is expected to require and of the materials needed. If the requester gives the go-ahead, the job will be entered in the shop's queue. If needed, the estimate will be adjusted as the job progresses or is finished. When applicable, a requisition or Inter-Departmental Transfer Form needs to be completed and processed. A partially filled-out form including the shop account number is linked here. We also request that users fill out the Electronics Shop Job Request Form.
